Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Cisco AnyConnect client features are enabled in AnyConnect profiles. These profiles can contain configuration settings like server list, backup server list, authentication time out, etc., for client VPN functionality, in addition to other optional client modules like Network Access Manager, ISE posture, customer experience feedback, and web. Connect to VPN with Cisco AnyConnect Client 1. Configure VPN Connection Servers The AnyConnect VPN server list consists of host name and host address pairs identifying the secure gateways that your VPN users will connect to. The host name can be an alias, an FQDN, or an IP address. The hosts added to the server list display in the Connect to drop-down list in the AnyConnect GUI. Several years ago we only had the standardized IPSec VPN (which still strongly exists today).

This service is available to all Clemson University faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students. You must have a valid Clemson USERNAME and password to use this service. If you have not been granted a Clemson USERNAME and password, use of this service is prohibited.

VPN (Virtual Private Network): A network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. VPN users can exchange data as if inside an internal network although they are not directly interconnected.

New VPN Service Update:

Cisco Anyconnect Vpn Setup

Clemson University upgraded to the new and improved VPN service in September 2010. All servers should be accessible through this new service at this time. If you have problems accessing a Clemson server, please submit a ticket to the Help Desk by sending an email to ithelp@clemson.edu and let us know what server or service you are having trouble accessing.

* The new VPN client must be run from the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer to install properly.

Eduroam

Eduroam has been tested and verified working on Apple OSX, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Android, and Apple iOS.

Connecting to Eduroam

While each device configuration is different, they all follow the same basic directions:

  1. Select the wireless network eduroam from the list of wireless networks.
  2. Select Connect (check Connect automatically if you’d like).
  3. Enter your WUSTL Key username with an @wustl.edu after it.
    • For example, if your WUSTL Key is jemurray you would enter jemurray@wustl.edu for the username.
  4. Enter your WUSTL Key password.
  5. You may be prompted to accept a certificate, select OK, Accept, Agree and Accept, Continue, or Ignore (it varies based on your device type).
    • If a window appears requesting additional settings, complete as such:
      • EAP Method: PEAP
      • Phase 2 Authentication: MSCHAPv2
      • Certificate: None or Unavailable
      • Anonymous: Leave blank
      • Username: WustlKeyUsername@wustl.edu
      • Password: Wustl Key password
    • Android users may need to select a CA certificate setting. Choose Do not validate (or Not Required or None, depending on your system). You may also need to specify your Phase 2 Authentication as MSCHAPv2.
  6. You are now connected to eduroam.
  • If you are unable to connect following these instructions, you may have to check your advanced settings, by following the instructions.
  • As a 3rd party service, there are times when the login might not work initially; trying again from a different location or an hour or two later typically works.
  • For a list of participating Eduroam institutions, check the Eduroam website.
VPN
  • VPN allows you to connect to University resources requiring a secure Washington University network connection to access.
  • You must have WUSTL 2FA enabled for your account in order to use VPN. For more information, see it.wustl.edu/2fa
  • Many tools do not require a VPN connection to access them. For example, Canvas, Zoom, Teams, Box, Outlook, and Office 365 apps. For a list of WashU systems that do and do not require VPN, view WashU Systems VPN Requirements (PDF).
  • You will need to be granted access to use VPN. Your office computer will need to be configured to allow remote connections. (Does not apply to Danforth students)

To request VPN access, complete the online ServiceNow request form. New requests for VPN access are subject to departmental approval. (Does not apply to Danforth students)
